Our metal workshop produces steel and aluminium structures for stage sets, exhibitions and art-in-architecture projects. From one-off pieces to complex load-bearing structures, we build components that meet high demands for precision, load capacity and ease of assembly.

From truss to structure

On around 580 m² we carry out metalwork and steel construction for stage, exhibition and art in architecture - from delicate trusses to robust substructures. Turning, milling, drilling, punching, bending, welding: in-house, we work steel and aluminium so that they can do their job on stage.

When sparks fly

Steel moves as soon as it gets hot, and every weld distorts the material slightly. We work with pre-set allowances, clamping jigs and the knowledge of where steel moves during welding. In the end, whatever has to be accurate to the millimetre fits.

Efficient lightness

Sometimes a single technique makes the difference to weight and speed: with flow drilling, we form threads directly in thin-walled hollow sections - no extra nut, no weld point, no added weight. When balancing load capacity against transport weight, every step that serves both is welcome.

FAQs on the metal workshop

What does the hertzer GmbH metal workshop make?

On around 580 m² we build load-bearing platforms and rostra, stairs, towers, frames and the substructures of entire stage sets - plus delicate special constructions that are more sculpture than structure. We carry out all common manual welding processes for steel in-house.

What does certification to EN 1090 mean?

EN 1090 governs the execution of load-bearing steel and aluminium structures. It demonstrates that welding procedures, personnel and factory production control have been assessed. hertzer GmbH is certified to EN 1090-2 for steel in execution classes EXC1 and EXC2 and to EN 1090-3 for aluminium in EXC1 - the usual evidence required for rostra, platforms and towers that carry people.

Does the metal workshop also build in aluminium?

Yes. On stage, weight is often decisive, because parts are moved by hand during scene changes or flown. We fabricate certified aluminium structures in execution class EXC1 - including where every kilogram counts.

How do large steel structures get onto the stage?

We design splits, connections and fittings at the engineering stage so that a build can be loaded, assembled in the little stage time available and struck again after the performance. Before delivery it is trial-assembled in our own hall. We install across Europe, with our own crews on site.

Does the metal workshop work with the other trades?

Right next door: because joinery, scenic decoration, paint shop and stage technology are in the same building in Berlin-Pankow, steelwork, timber build-up, finish and drive are developed to fit one another. Trial assemblies of any size are possible without a single transport.

Does hertzer GmbH also build to someone else’s design?

Yes. We work from our own shop drawings and from drawings by set designers, scenographers, architecture practices and the theatres’ technical departments. Where a design needs refining so that it is load-bearing, transportable and can be assembled, our design engineers take care of it.
