Set construction for opera and theatre

Whether for stage, exhibition or event: we build structures that not only convince in their design but also work in day-to-day operation - reliable, transportable and made for repeated set-up and dismantling.

Every trade, one stage picture

Joinery, metalwork, scenic decoration and paint shop work side by side here. Theatre sculpture and the making-up and processing of typical theatre textiles and projection screens are part of our everyday work. Structure, movement, painting and decoration come about as one holistic process - in parallel, in one place, with the same goal.

Stage machinery

Revolves, stage lifts, lifting and travelling mechanisms, retractable walls, kinetic installations - lifting, lowering and transformation as a principle, not an accessory. We develop mechanics, drives and controls together with the load-bearing steelwork. Mechanical engineering and pneumatics are done in-house; hydraulics and control systems we handle together with established partners.

The art of the brief

Set construction for scenic spaces thrives on information - artistic, technical, financial and scheduling. Not everything needs to be fixed at the outset. What should be clear is what is fixed and where there is room to manoeuvre. Where questions remain open, we are happy to work them out with you: with samples, models, mock-ups - and solutions that fit your budget and timeframe. Once there is a clear brief at every level, the collaboration can begin.

Where we build, rules apply.

Set construction sometimes combines stagecraft with mechanical engineering, and follows the relevant regulations accordingly. We work to IGVW SQP7, the industry standard for scenery, and to DGUV 215-316 for fire protection. Where components bear loads, lift or move, the Machinery Regulation and DIN EN ISO 12100 apply. We clarify what that means for your project in advance - not once we are on stage.

FAQs on set construction

What does set construction at hertzer GmbH cover?

We handle technical planning, fabrication, surface finishing, trial assembly, and transport and installation on site. Among other things, we build stage sets, scenery, platforms, stairs, rostra, revolves and furniture in timber, steel and aluminium.

How long does it take to realise a stage set?

The time required depends on complexity, construction, surface requirements and assembly effort. A reliable schedule is possible as soon as the technical requirements and shop drawings are defined.

Does hertzer GmbH also build to third-party designs?

Yes. Our work is based on the designs, models and plans of set designers, scenographers, architects and technical departments. Where needed, we add the necessary technical planning and detailed engineering.

How are stage sets prepared for transport and touring?

Assemblies are divided for transport and assembly at the engineering stage. Connections and fittings are designed for repeated set-up and dismantling and, where needed, checked in a trial assembly before delivery.

Who takes care of the surface finishes?

Surfaces, finishes and painted designs are realised in our own workshops. Where needed, we coordinate special coatings and spray finishes with qualified partner companies.

Do all details have to be settled before the project starts?

No. What matters are clear objectives and the key technical, scheduling and financial parameters. Open details can be developed together as the project progresses.

Can solutions that are not yet fully defined also be developed?

Yes. To evaluate constructions, materials or design approaches, we support the decision-making process with samples, models, prototypes and trial assemblies.
