Scenic decoration for stage and exhibition

What shapes the picture is often the decoration: cladding, patinated surfaces, fabric coverings, paint - the final, convincing expression. It defines the look once steel and timber construction have provided structure and volume.

Fake world

Appliqué, ornamentation, upholstery, faux finishes, simulated ageing or refined surfaces - this is where things are made to look real without being real. What you see is show, is effect.

Sculpture

Something real is created at the edge of scenic decoration: theatre sculpture - fully three-dimensional physicality that must nevertheless not be the real thing. A field of its own that often goes beyond the scope of our workshop: for larger pieces we rely on long-standing partner companies, while smaller ones are sometimes made here in-house.

Sourcing small furniture and 3D models, adapting their design and fitting them into the overall picture - that is part of the scenic decoration workshop too.

FAQs on scenic decoration

What is scenic decoration?

Scenic decoration brings construction and design together. This is where stage sets, exhibitions and art objects get their visible form. Through cladding, sculptural work, custom pieces and preparation for scenic painting, technical structures become spatial stagings with the desired visual effect.

How large can trial assemblies be?

In our 580 m² assembly hall with a 9 m ceiling height, even large assemblies and complex structures can be set up in full or in substantial part and checked before delivery. This means fit, assembly sequences and technical functions can be verified and, if necessary, optimised before use.

Does hertzer GmbH also build for museums and exhibitions?

Yes. Alongside stage sets and scenery, we realise exhibition architecture, display cases, media stations and walk-in spatial installations for museums, exhibition venues, companies and agencies. The requirements differ depending on the application, but technical planning and fabrication follow the same quality standards.

How are special surfaces and material effects created?

Surfaces are developed and executed in close collaboration between scenic decoration and scenic painting. Texturing, finishes, glazes and patinas can create a wide variety of material effects - from concrete and natural stone to metal, wood or ageing effects.

Can sets be dismantled and put into storage afterwards?

Yes, that is built into the design. Builds are planned in segments that can be loaded, stacked and reassembled - for revivals, tours and the trip into storage.
